Name: Selena Light
Age group: 25-29 years
First started swimming…. I first started swimming competitively with a summer swim club when I was 10 years old after completing all of my swim lessons.
Swimming history…Summer Swim Club in Quesnel, BC (Ya Sealions!) starting when I was 10 years old. After breaking a BCSSA provincial record in 100 breast and earning my Senior National qualifying time at 15 years old I began travelling a couple times a week to swim with a year-round swim club in Prince George – Barracudas! Here I swam for my final two years of high school and attended a couple national meets – my first being Canadian Olympic Trials in 2004. After finishing high school in Quesnel, I moved to Victoria to attend UVic and swam with the Vikes for three years.
First joined Masters… I first joined Masters in September 2011 after a couple years break after swimming varsity.
Reason for joining…. I joined masters after working at the YMCA where I lifeguarded and coached a masters drop in group weekly – Susan swam regularly with this group and told me about Vic Masters!! Marija and I decided to join together to enjoy club swimming life once again.
Some highlights of workouts, social events, meets, etc. with Vic Masters…. My all time highlight, of course, has been meeting Martin through Vic Masters during my first year there! We have enjoyed many adventures together since then, and are both grateful to Victoria Masters for bringing us together with our common love of swimming.
Some benefits of swimming with Vic Masters…. Swimming with Victoria Masters has allowed me to have fun competing again, training with amazing coaches and always positive teammates, and enjoy social events and new friendships. I’m looking forward to many more great years to come with this team!

First started swimming…. I first started swimming on my own as an adult, learning to swim off of YouTube videos.
Swimming history… Mad public swim skills.
First joined Masters… I first joined masters in 2010 (maybe 2009? – I’m getting old).
Reason for joining…. One day while I was swimming, Coach Keith was setting up for a Victoria Masters practice and approached me and asked me if I ever swam with a club before. I said no… and he said I should swim with Victoria Masters. The rest is history.

My mega highlight is obviously meeting Selena and the life that we have lived since has been amazing. I’m very happy. A very close second to this mega highlight is Nationals 2012 when I swam 59 second 100 free and 2.14 200 free. Those were really great. And Selena and I have been slacking ever since! 😛
Some benefits of swimming with Vic Masters….
Swimming competitively and in a club allowed me for the first time to not feel like a loser. I learned that with effort and patience I was able to achieve my goals and my outcomes were for me to decide. I’ve met some amazing people and have made great, lasting friendships. I really enjoy racing, even when beaten by Selena.
