The VMSC season starts in September and ends in late August.  Mid-season registration may be available but is dependent on space. Fees will be pro-rated.

The 2019-20 season Membership Fee is $535 for the year, which includes MSABC fees. Fees will be pro-rated if a swimmer starts mid-season, providing there is space available.

To register, complete a registration form online (VMSC_Reg_2017-18) and ensure you’ve completed the registration by arranging full payment. (methods: interact, cheque, cash?)

Punch cards for drop-in sessions are available for the late evening practices only (8:30-9:30 pm). The cost is $100 + MSABC fee of $45. Talk to a coach on deck if you are interested in this option.


  • What’s the cost of membership? 

The cost for the 2018-19 season is $520 for the year, which includes the $45 MSABC fees. Fees will be pro-rated if a swimmer starts mid-season, providing there is space available.

  • How do I pay for membership? 

Preferably e-Interact, but cheques and cash are also acceptable.

  • When are the practices?  

VMSC practices up to four times per week. Participation isn’t mandatory but encouraged. You can choose between: Tuesdays at 7:30 pm, Thursdays at 7:30 pm, Saturdays at 7:30 am, and Sundays at 10:00 am — OR — Tuesdays at 8:30 pm, Thursdays at 8:30 pm, Saturdays at 7:30 am, and Sundays at 10:00 am.   • What is the range of skill levels within the club? 

We have eight lanes, with a range from beginners to world record holders. There is a lane, and a spot in every lane for everyone. There is no minimum skill level, fitness level, speed level, endurance level etc. required? However a comfort with being immersed in water would be expected.

  • I am looking for a welcoming novice program in Victoria. Does your club fit that need?

Beginners are always welcome. Our coaches focus on technique, and there are always a variety of drills that help to improve your stroke. Workouts are tailored to swimmers’ fitness levels and goals for the year.

  • I have pretty good technique, but don’t have the established endurance or speed that you might expect from a club swimmer. How is this sort of thing accommodated? 

You start at your own pace in the lane you feel comfortable in. If you want to increase your abilities, share your goals with the coaches and work your way into faster lanes.

  • I’m a former competitive swimmer, but I haven’t hit the water in about 10 years. Can I still join the club?

There are eight lanes with a broad range of abilities, and we always start the year off gradually to accommodate swimmers’ off-season fitness levels. If you’d like to give it a try you can come for about a week and see if you like it before making a firm commitment.

  • Is it ok if someone joins not knowing one of the major strokes (e.g. butterfly – somehow I was never taught this one)? 

That’s not a problem – we spend the first couple of months each season on stroke technique. Swimmers have a variety of strengths and challenges with each stroke and each lane works out how to spread those abilities around during practice so it tends not to be a problem.

  • Are members expected to attend all four of the listed practice times or is Tuesday and Thursday plus one of the long course practices adequate? 

There is no minimum requirement; we all have busy lives, so just come when you can.

  • Can I swim on Tuesday at 7:30 pm and on Thursday at 8:30 pm? 

No. To ensure that the full membership is able to enjoy uncongested lane space in short course, members are required to choose either the 7:30 pm or 8:30 pm slot for both of their weekday workouts. Note that the 7:30 pm slot often fills up quickly each season.

  • How many swimmers are there per lane?

For short course weekday practices (25 meters), the average is five to six swimmers per lane. For long course weekend practices (50 meters), there are about fifteen swimmers per lane.

  • Can you provide a sense of the types of sets I would be swimming so I can see the type of distances that I would be expected to cover; or the times that I might see on a set (e.g. 100m on 1:00, etc.). 

Typically we get in about three kilometers per practice. Visit our workout page for samples of our sessions. Coaches cycle the weeks’ practices for speed and endurance throughout the year.

  • I want to register with MSABC (Masters Swimming Association of B.C.) and be able to go to swim meets, but I train on my own. Can I pay you my MSABC fees and just go to meets with Victoria Masters (and swim on relay teams)?

Yes we can definitely sign you up with MSABC, which will allow you to enter meets. The cost for the 2018-19 season is $45.

  • I have a medical condition (scoliosis – curvature of the spine) and was surgically operated on in my late teens (placement of rods and screws to provide some correction to the spine curvature). I am interested in starting swimming again mainly for exercise purposes and to strengthen my back. I have not swum much since having surgery so I am sure it will be a bit different feeling than what I remember. What do you suggest?

As with ALL health conditions or concerns, as long as the coaches are aware of your challenges, they will either make suggestions for adaptations specifically for you, or allow you to modify the workout to ensure that you swim safely and pain-free.
